How do you determine the correct size of motorcycle helmet?
To get a good indication of your helmet size, measuring with a tape measure works best. For this, the correct measuring point is most of the head, just above the eyebrows. The number of centimeters you measure gives an indication. By repeating the measurement a number of times you have a more accurate measurement. If you fall between two sizes in terms of measurement, go for the smaller of the two.
The size of a motorcycle helmet can be indicated in two ways. Letters, or numbers, are used. In both cases the size refers to the head circumference in centimeters.
The fit of a motorcycle helmet
After you have an indication of the right size motorcycle helmet, the puzzling continues. One helmet is not the other and although you may not immediately expect that, this certainly applies to the fit. That is why it is important to realize what shape your head is.
There are roughly three fits that helmet manufacturers use. These are an oval , round-oval , or round- shaped helmet shell. By looking in the mirror yourself, you can determine which is best suited. If your head is proportionally longer than it is wide, an oval fit will look best. When the length and width are close to each other, it is best to wear a round-oval or round fit.
Because those fits differ so much, we recommend that you first look at the fit, before you blind yourself to the looks of the helmet.
When does a motorcycle helmet fit properly?
A new motorcycle helmet is good if it actually feels on the tight side in the beginning. It must fit well around the head and not give any (painful) pressure points. If he presses on a certain point on the fore or back of the head, chances are that the fit does not suit you, or the size is not right.
The helmet may be tight on the cheeks. The often soft cheek pads are actually the first thing that will collapse the longer you wear the helmet. This makes the helmet a bit looser after wearing it a few times. There is therefore nothing to worry about when you bite your cheeks when you put your jaws together the first time.
Once you have put on the helmet, there are some more tricks to assess the fit, as we can also use in the store. When you push the helmet forward with both hands, there should not be too much space between the forehead and helmet interior. If you can just put a finger in between, it is the right fit. In addition, you can move the helmet to the left and right, whereby the cheek pads must fit tightly and should certainly not come off the cheeks.
Why is a tight motorcycle helmet important?
When you try on a helmet for the first time, you will have the impression that a loose motorcycle helmet is more comfortable. Nevertheless, it is important that your helmet fits well and tightly. As a result, it offers the best protection because it cannot shift when things unexpectedly go wrong. In addition, a tight helmet is in any case quieter than if you take it too big and that the helmet lining will still collapse during use.
What can happen with an oversized motorcycle helmet?
You should not want to wear a motorcycle helmet that is too large for two reasons. It is uncomfortable and unsafe. Because the helmet does not fit tightly, spaces are created between the head and the helmet interior. This allows the helmet to act as a sound box so that you hear a lot of wind noise. In addition, the helmet can be annoying when you drive into the wind, drive at high speed, or turn your head on the highway to look into the blind spot.
In terms of safety, you will understand that a helmet that is too loose is not optimally safe. The helmet can shift when you accidentally fall, or in the worst case even come off the head.
What can happen with a motorcycle helmet that is too small?
A motorcycle helmet that is too small is certainly not good. After a few minutes or sometimes a few hours, a motorcycle helmet that is too small can lead to a tight feeling. Ultimately, this results in reduced concentration and we must of course - just like headaches - avoid that while driving
