To keep things simple, two different materials are used in producing the outer shell of a motorcycle helmet: polycarbonate and fiberglass. Polycarbonate, the cheapest of the two, is a plastic type that is slightly softer. Polycarbonate helmets have an average life of five years. Fiberglass helmets are characterized by their low weight, high impact protection, durability and last an average of eight years.
